Free software that actually helps?
Yes, you read that right. Believe it or not, you don’t have to “steal” good software. You don’t even have to pay lots of money for expensive software to get everything that your heart desires for your computer.
There are many programs out there, both for PC and Macs that are free and can be very useful. Let’s take a look at some of them - you may have even heard of a couple...
Computer Cleanup & Protection
CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner)
This highly used software helps to clean up all the temporary files and browsing history and the little residue that stays behind in the system, that we don’t really need. Doing a regular clean up of these files allows your hard drive to have the space it’s supposed to have and can remove junk files which helps boost performance of your system.
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free)
This shouldn’t be used as a replacement for your anti-virus software, but it can be used to help your computer if it does get a virus. If you don’t update your Anti-virus software, you may end up with new viruses. Malwarebytes will install, even if you have a virus on the computer. It has an incredible knack of removing some tough bugs!
Virtual Enviroments
VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/)
Do you want to continue using Windows XP, or try Linux or Windows 8 without re-formatting your system and re-installing everything? This great program will create a virtual environment that allows you to install multiple Operating Systems and run them in real-time whilst you are running your current OS - whether it’s Mac OS X or Windows 7. Perfect for developers, or just those that want the best of both worlds!
Productivity
LibreOffice (http://www.libreoffice.org/)
Want Microsoft Office 2010 but can’t afford the the money for it? Try LibreOffice. It will read and edit any files done on Office! It is a great substitute to Microsoft’s Office and is an open source Productivity Suite. That means there are many add-ons developed by different people and, the best thing is, it’sfree!
Media
VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/)
A incredible media player! It’s simple and easy to use. Even though the layout is nothing special, it’s hiding a powerful player. One of the best things about VLC is that it can play almost any video in any code... without the need of downloading it! They are built in. And we’re not joking - it’s any video! No more worries of having to convert video types because the media player can’t read it. Also, even if a file is damaged or missing parts, VLC will, most of the time, still be able to read it!
